Our mission is to support and encourage healthy environmental practices on the Sunshine Coast. We support the growth of sustainable agriculture on previously developed land and encourage proper use and expansion of the Agricultural Land Reserve. We support and encourage self- sufficiency in individuals and small businesses by sharing information and resources. We also encourage the purchase of local produce and related products and work towards creating a network of interested parties for the benefit of all. The One Straw Society hosts and presents many local events, campaigns, and projects. The annual Seedy Saturday - Roberts Creek event raises awareness of local sustainable food production. It is a great event where growers can swap seeds, shop farmer booths, buy plants and seedlings, and gather valuable information. The Farm Gate Market is mid-week, mid-coast market in Roberts Creek every Wednesday from 3 - 6 pm, April - October. All local, organic produce and value-added products. Community consignment table run by honour system - drop off your garden excess and sell or trade. Live music, good food, great people. The Grow Your Own Dinner project empowers individuals and families to grow their own food in what ever space they have – big or small. We hope to encourage our local community to reclaim the art of backyard vegetable gardening and to live a happier, ecological lifestyle, with greater food security. We live in a gardener’s paradise – take advantage of it! Our Live and Learn program offers ongoing workshops and activities in year-round food harvesting, preparing and processing, as well as teaching other traditional skills in the use of natural resources for sustainable living. The Sunshine Coast Fruit Tree Project (SCFTP) is a community based initiative that works to build community and strengthen food security using local fruit. Of our many goals, one is that this project becomes part of the permanent culture of the Coast through mapping the locations of food trees and resources that are potentially available for community use. The Hands On Lands program connects gardeners and farmers with available growing space and the Take A Farmer To Lunch campaign creates awareness and connections between consumers and local organic growers. Residing in Roberts Creek, Heart Gardens is a community permaculture demonstration site designed to teach people about nature and ecology.
